Storm Chasers: What are they and how can you avoid them?

We know. The movie Twister might come to mind or that time when you wanted to go chase the tornado during high school, but that’s not the type of storm chasers we are talking about.

Storm chasers are companies or individuals who flock to an area that has experienced a catastrophe. They are the ones that will knock on doors right after damaging storms and offer to do the needed repairs. Sounds helpful, especially during a crisis, but many times they are not licensed to do so or don’t have insurance to back up their work. These people are trying to take advantage of you.

If someone comes to your house following a storm offering a free estimate, do your homework before hiring that company.

Here are some things to do to avoid this scam:

  1. Ask to see a local license.
  2. Ask for proof of insurance.
  3. Google the company and make sure they show up. Make sure they are receiving good reviews.
  4. Ask for a list of previous customers, and make sure they are local.

We recommend hiring an established, local roofer. That way, if something does go wrong, you know they’ll be around to fix it and service you in the future.
